Cities X Citizens
Dr. Silvano De la Llata, Assistant Professor, Geography Planning and Environment (Concordia University)
This project explores community planning and sustainable public space design strategies to reconnect urban spaces otherwise fragmented by urban infrastructure. Focusing on the case of the Decarie Expressway, this project proposes the creation of a system of sustainable public spaces (such as linear parks, tree canopies and spaces for solar-panels) to socially and physically reconnect the neighborhoods of Côte-des-Neiges and Notre-Dame-de-Grâce. Using participatory design methodologies, this project involves citizens, direct stakeholders and urban designers in the planning of sustainable spaces for their own neighborhoods. The project departs from the idea that in order to achieve sustainability and resilience in cities, citizens need to be engaged, informed and on board.
